In the late spring, there was a merchant named Shang Sanbao. His ship was loaded with various strange goods, and he intended to go overseas to trade with foreign countries. The ship was moored in front of Meizhou Island. When they were about to weigh anchor and set sail, the anchor got stuck and couldn't be raised. The boatman dived into the water to check and saw a monster sitting on the anchor motionless. The boatman quickly reported this to the merchant, who was shocked. He went ashore and asked the people on the island, "Which god here is the most efficacious?" Someone replied, "Mazu on this mountain is extremely efficacious and always answers prayers." So Shang Sanbao went to the Mazu Temple to worship and pray. In a trance, he saw the goddess leisurely on the anchor, and the ghosts and monsters fled in the face of this. Immediately, the anchor was raised. Shang Sanbao then inserted an incense stick into the crevice of the stone in front of the temple and prayed, "If the god is efficacious, this incense stick will be the proof. I hope you can show signs of efficacy, keep me safe on the waterway, and help me make a fortune. When I return, I will definitely build a temple on a large scale to repay the god's merits."

When the ship was sailing on the sea and encountered dangerous wind and waves, Shang Sanbao would hold the incense and pray upwards, and each time he could get obvious protection from Mazu. Three years later, Shang Sanbao returned safely. He came to the Mazu Temple again and saw that the incense stick he had inserted before had taken root and sprouted, growing into three trees. It was exactly the 23rd day of the third lunar month, Mazu's birthday. The three trees had lush branches and leaves, exuding a rich and fragrant aroma. The merchant was amazed at this miraculous response. He donated money to rebuild the temple, and the appearance of the temple was completely transformed. During the Tiansheng reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty, the divine light of Mazu appeared several times. Devout believers felt various supernatural events again, so they further expanded the land occupied by the temple, and the corridors and halls of the temple became more magnificent.
