In the first year of the Yuanyou reign of Emperor Zhezong of the Song Dynasty (1086 AD), there was a high mound in the east of Putian's sea area, about a hundred li away from Meizhou. Often, a strange glow appeared at night. The fishermen suspected there was a strange treasure, so they kept watch. They found that a floating withered branch on the water was giving off light. The fishermen picked it up and put it in their homes. The next morning, they found that the withered branch had returned to its original place. When they tried again, the same thing happened. That night, the goddess appeared in the dreams of the villagers in Ninghai Mound and said, "I am the goddess of Meizhou. That withered branch is actually what I rely on. You should worship me, and I will bestow blessings upon you." The elders in the village found this strange and told it to Li Gong, the Zhigan official. Li Gong said, "This is where the god dwells. I've heard that there is a goddess in Meizhou, and her miraculous deeds have been known for a long time. Now that the divine light has appeared with obvious responses, it must bring blessings to our village. Praying for the protection of the god probably lies in this!" So Li Gong raised funds from the public to build a temple, sculpted a statue for reverent worship, and named the temple "Shengdun". Since then, when people came to pray, the responses were as quick as an echo.
