At that time, there were two demons causing trouble. One was called Jiaying, and the other was called Jiayou. Sometimes they would seize people's souls and bewitch their minds in desolate graves and hills. Sometimes they would sink boats and break small vessels in huge waves. As soon as Mazu arrived, they fled to the distant and misty clouds. Just then, a passenger ship was sailing in the middle of the river. Caught by the wind, it was about to sink. A demon with a red face and golden attire was seen jumping at the bow of the ship. Mazu immediately transformed into a ship full of treasures, floating and moving. Jiayou abandoned the passenger ship, rode the tide, and went forward to chase the treasure - laden ship. Mazu suppressed it with incantations. Struck by the incantations, Jiayou fled in panic. Filled with fear, it submitted.

Later, Mazu walked alone on the mountain path. Jiaying didn't know it was Mazu and thought she was a beautiful woman from the folk. It intended to violate her. Mazu gently waved her whisk, raising dust to form a haze. Jiayou then used its transformation skills, jumping up and down, but it couldn't leave the original place. It seemed to be restricted by something and couldn't find an exit to break through. Thus, it retreated in fear.

However, the evil thoughts of these two demons were not completely eliminated. More than a year later, they came out to cause trouble again. Mazu said, "These two demons do not convert to the right path. After all, they are evil creatures." So she asked everyone to burn incense, observe fasting, and hold spells. She herself took a small boat and pretended to be a fisherman, roaming in the mist - covered waters. When Jiaying saw this, it immediately boarded the small boat against the tide and sat in front of the mast. Before it realized, the small boat had reached the shore. Mazu stood at the bow of the boat. Only then did Jiayou wake up, quickly repented and begged for forgiveness. Mazu then accepted them as her generals and included them in the celestial group in charge of water affairs. There were a total of eighteen members in this celestial group. Thereafter, whenever people on the boat were in danger, as long as they let their hair down and sincerely asked Mazu for help, they usually received Mazu's silent protection.
