Suddenly, a sinister monster appeared in Gaoli Village. It could harm people by spitting sand - like things, causing them to contract various diseases. The villagers went to Mazu together, asking her to help with the treatment. Mazu knew that it was a small wood - spirit from a remote mountain area causing trouble. She took some spells and asked the villagers to paste them on the bedside of the patients. Everyone did as Mazu told them. They heard a noise from the roof tiles, and a bird - like thing flew away desperately. Mazu traced its tracks, intending to destroy its lair and eliminate it. When she arrived, the monster immediately transformed into a small bird and hid in the treetop. Only a mass of black mist was seen rising above the distant treetops. Mazu said, "We can't leave it here to bring trouble to our hometown!" So she chased after it to capture it. Only a wren was chirping. Mazu sprinkled the magic water, and the bird fell from the air. However, it lost its physical form, leaving only a small tuft of withered hair. Mazu lit a fire to burn this tuft of hair, and suddenly the true form of the monster appeared. It was a little devil. The little devil kowtowed and said, "I'm willing to serve under you!" Mazu accepted it. The night before the spells were delivered, this monster suddenly said to the villagers, "I'm leaving. You should entertain me with a feast!" The host prepared etiquette and a banquet to entertain it. The next morning, as soon as the spells arrived, it left from the roof. Presumably, it also knew in advance that it couldn't escape Mazu's magic power.
